Jan. 28th 1875 The James-Samuel home was surrounded by part of a 46-man posse, organized by Sheriff Groom to see if there were any “subterranean outlets” from the house. The house & property was searched as the family stood in a doorway. Inside were 3 young men who, according to the Kansas City Times, had been there since the Pinkerton raid. They were E.M. Samuel, Ed Miller & George James, suspected of being pickets for the James brothers. The 3 treated their arrest as a joke & were released a few days later. A horse belonging to neighbor Dr. Scruggs which apparently had been missing was found, still saddled but with its bridle removed, 3 miles west of the farm home. Port holes were found in the Samuel home & it was assumed that the James boys were at home & had escaped after a fight. But the newspaper account does not make clear if they were referring to the episode with the Pinkertons or the later encounter with the posse.
