(Photos by Jim Coppo) PETERBOROUGH – In a game that had more plot twists than a soap opera, the Monadnock Regional High girls’ basketball team emerged with what its coach believes was a defining moment for the program. That’s what kind of game this was. The Huskies came all the way back from a 17-point deficit, rallied from behind in each overtime and emerged with a 60-55 win that went into triple OT. “It meant everything,” said Monadnock coach Curt Dutilley , whose team lost to ConVal in the Zero Gravity Holiday Tournament at Keene State College. We’re a young, developing team that has to learn how to win when things are hard. And things were hard.” The Huskies (4-5) trailed 22-5 with 1:47 left in the first half and didn’t take their first lead of the game until there was 1:09 left in regulation when Hannah Rehmer scored to make it 37-36. Those final 69 seconds in regulation was just the start of what turned out to be a wild and entertaining finish in front of a large and noisy crowd at the Maguire Gym that included the ConVal band set up right behind the Monadnock bench. ConVal’s Jess Nerz (18 points) responded with a 3 to put the Cougars up 39-37 with 1:00 left. Rehmer (8 points) came back with a jumper in the paint to tie the game and Nerz put ConVal back up with a free throw. Monadnock’s Shannon Hart (game-high 20 points) forced OT by making a one of two free throws with 18 seconds left. Jordan Mills (11 points) hit a deep jumper in the corner with six seconds left in the first overtime that had the ConVal bench celebrating thinking the Cougars (2-5) had taken the lead with a 3. It was only a 2, tying the game at 47 and forcing a second OT. Dutilley shortened his bench and went primarily with Hart, Rehmer, Jill Lotito (11 points), Avrie Bassingthwaite (6) and Caitlyn Walker (13) down the stretch. He said each responded with some type of big play. Lotito’s came with 1:06 left in the second extra session when she knocked down a 3 to tie the game at 50 and forced a third OT. “It was the greatest feeling when it went it,” Lotito said. A crucial moment came with 3:36 left in the third overtime when Nerz fouled out with the game still tied at 50. The Cougars actually went ahead 52-50 on a basket by Megan Buydos (seven points), but the Huskies tied the game on another jumper by Lotito and went ahead for good when Hart stole the ball and scored. The Huskies sealed the win at the line. Hart was 10-for-12 at the foul line, 4-for-4 in OT. Monadnock was 20-for-32 at the line for the game, while ConVal was 9-for-23. Hart and Walker played the overtime with four fouls each. “We were aware of our fouls,” Hart said. Lost in the late-game heroics was Monadnock’s ability to regroup at halftime being down 22-9. The Huskies won the third quarter, 15-7, to get right back in the game. “I struggled to get our girls back into that attack mode, but that’s easier said than done when the other team is attacking,” ConVal coach Brian Pickering said. “At halftime, our coach pumped us up,” Lotito said. “He told us to step up and keep our heads in the game.” The Cougars are back home Friday against John Stark, while Monadnock is on the road again, traveling to Claremont to play Stevens High.
