January 23, 2015 Sorry for the dead air. I guess the ol adage, No news is good news applies to our posts. After waiting and pining for the New Year, we ushered in 2015 with quiet fanfare, the four of us toasting a new beginning. I think we were in bed by 12:04 a.m. The past month has been a whirlwind. Bob continues to gain lost ground. He was cleared to begin exercising and outpatient therapy. His first day he made it six minutes on a stationary bike. After a week, he had advanced to twenty minutes. He has graduated to the YMCA and trying to do more everyday. He tires easily and doesnt have much stamina but I see more of his old self surfacing everyday. His hair is starting to grow back as is his much beloved mustache. His January check up, the first post treatment went well. Another long conversation with his oncologist about remission vs. cure. Bob is currently in remission, free of signs and symptoms of active cancer. In order to be cured, you need to stay in remission for a certain amount of time, depending of the type of cancer. Because of the aggressive nature of Burkitts and its propensity to relapse sooner than later, a cure will be declared after just two years in remission, compared to other cancers five year, eight year marks. This whole cancer gig has been such a learning curve. Just when we are breathing a little easier, we are acutely aware that we are engaged in an unnerving waiting game. His doctor mentioned its a challenge for a cancer survivor to learn to trust their body again, the same body that betrayed in the first place. Anxiety has been an unwelcome visitor in our home lately, visiting all of us. Rough stuff. Bobs been released to go back to work next month. It will be good for his psyche, returning back to his co-workers, friends, patients and a paycheck. We are more than ready to get back to normal. :) We continue to feel so loved and supported and without a shadow of a doubt we know that has made all the difference. We can never thank you enough. Thank you Sharon Schmatt for the cereal, milk and bananas! Thank you Jesse Burgess & Junko Okada for your generosity! Thank you Jami Wipf for the wine to help us celebrate!
