January 24, 1966: The Byrds spend the first of two days recording “Eight Miles High” at Columbia Studios in Hollywood. Theyll finish the song the next day. Inspired by the music of both John Coltrane and Ravi Shankar, it will be released as a single and appear on The Byrds album “Fifth Dimension.” At its release it will be banned by many stations across the country because of its supposed drug references.
