***Jason Carter and TRS Update*** We had an exciting afternoon today! After posting an AJC article regarding Senator Carters statements on allowing a portion of TRS to be invested in high risk start-ups, we saw the TRAGIC community jump into action. As a group, TRAGIC is 100% opposed to any changes in TRS, and many of our members let the Carter campaign know our feelings. Unlike Nathan Deals office, who, to my knowledge, has never acknowledged any one of our many emails voicing our concerns, Senator Carters campaign reached out to many of us via facebook, email, and phone. According to the campaign, the entirely of Senator Carters statements were NOT reported by the AJC. Jason Carter said he would not endorse any changes without the full support of the teachers and others affected by any changes to TRS. Contrast this with Senate Resolution 782 (which is sitting in committee for the upcoming Legislative Session) that would effectively destroy TRS as we know it. Nathan Deal supports SR 782, and would LOVE to be sitting in the Governors office and get to appoint the 17-member committee that would decide the future of TRS. If this is the case, we would lose TRS for future generations of Georgia teachers. We are opposed to any changes to the Teachers Retirement System of Georgia. It is one of the most solvent, fully-funded public pension systems in the country, and is even recognized by the Chamber of Commerce as being a stellar system. I am pleased Senator Carter and his campaign has responded so quickly to our concerns, and hope we can keep clear lines of communication open! I have asked the campaign to provide the full statement, and will post that when I hear from them. They have told several TRAGIC members today that Carter would not do anything without the support of teachers, and this is NOT reflected in the article, save the final paragraph.
