Satisan newindianexpress/states/kerala/Justice-Krishna-Iyer-calls-critics-fanatics-justifies-Modi/2013/09/29/article1809561.ece Justice Krishna Iyer calls critics fanatics, justifies Modi By Express News Service - KOCHIPublished: 29th September 2013 08:27 AMLast Updated: 29th September 2013 08:27 AM Calling his critics ‘fanatics’, eminent jurist Justice V R Krishna Iyer has come up in his own defence after he was criticised for being a Modi sympathiser as he had sent a letter to the BJP leader and Gujarat Chief Minister supporting his leadership. In a letter ‘Response to my critics of being a Modi Advocate’, the nonagenarian said: “There are many fanatics who disagree with me in my advocating the leadership of Modi. They are entitled to hold their view.” He compared the situation with that of the Nehruvian era. “I warmly accept the great humanism and sublime leadership of comrade Jawaharlal Nehru. I accept his ideology but do not agree that political power in Indian should always belong to Nehru scions,” he said. Iyer said there have been several Nehru critics but history has proved him to be great. Modi, in a smaller way once an anti-Muslim, might undergo a spiritual transformation, he believed. Putting a strong defence for Modi, he said: “Modi’s critics accuse him of Muslim mass murder. This is a charge which has not been established.” “How did the people of Gujarat even after 2002 chose him as Chief Minister? Do not the Muslims of Gujarat welcome his leadership? We cannot be dogmatic merely because we disagree with the politics of Modi. I see no reason why we should not trust Narendra Modi anymore than many leaders of Hindu, Muslim or other theological faiths,” he argued. Iyer said: “I have voted for the Congress, for the communist and for my independent ideology.” The former minister affirmed that ‘I have never been a BJP man and I may assert that I will never be a Hindu communalist. Just the way I was never a Nehruvite but always have adored Panditji”. He stated that his support to the Gujarat Chief Minister was “on the assumption that he would be a socialist, secularist and constitutional democrat after coming to power under the Constitution with its marvelous preamble”.
