Jeffco News Recent Changes Affecting our GT Kids - The Gifted & Talented Program is under Diverse Learners - SPED (Special Education). In Gifted Center classrooms, special education psychologists worked with the children on a regular basis. A decision was recently made to only allow special education psychologists to continue work with Special Education children and eliminate or significantly limit their work with gifted children. Given the issues our gifted children deal with; bullying, suicide, depression, anxiety, etc, this is a very unfortunate decision. Luckily, Dr. Kapushion and the GT Team are working with the Student Services Team to find qualified and passionate counselors to support the affective needs in the GT Center classrooms from February to May of this year. On a separate topic, as schools work with Student Based Budgeting (SBB) there is concern how this may impact GT Center classrooms in an effort to manage staff and student balance. JAGC will continue to work with administration and staff to ensure our childrens needs are met and Jeffco retains its leadership role of excellence in GT Education in this state. JAGC President, Susan Miller, has sent a letter to the Jefferson County School Board for their meeting January 15th. See the letter here. Student Based Budgeting - Jeffco is moving to a new way of budgeting called Student Based Budgeting (SBB) starting in the 2015-2016 school year. Denver, Cherry Creek, Adams 12, among others currently use SBB. SBB brings budgeting to the school level. As described by Superintendent Dan McMinimee, It’s an opportunity for principals to have more control over how money is spent to further student achievement in their schools. Previously, principals were held accountable for achievement results, but they had little control over the resources they needed to get those results. Funding decisions were made at the central level based on staffing formulas and school-specific programs. With SBB, schools will be funded per student, and the amount of funding attached to each child will vary based on his or her needs. Jeffco principals are currently receiving training and guidance about SBB and how to work with their school communities to determine spending priorities. Jeffcos SBB Fact Sheet is here. A Jeffco PowerPoint presentation to the School Board on September 4, 2014 is here, page 8 is where SBB is explained.
