Jerry - Its Saturday and hes speaking! When I arrived this morning both Coleen and Karin (one of Jerrys daughters) were there with him. I told him that he was doing good. (I didnt know that they had given him the device that permits him to speak.) He quietly replied, If Im doing good, how can I do gooder! I was delighted to hear him speak and express himself. Coleen left Jerry with Karin and I to do some shopping and I asked the staff to set him up in the chair. As I was cutting his hair with help from Karin, he volunteered, this is a team effort. Just after the haircut, while Karin was washing his head and face, the nurse came in and asked, Are you talking? Jerry replied, Occasionally! Last evening I failed to report that Jerry had done some writing. He wrote his signature and though it wasnt flawless, it was undeniably the Gerald Stone signature that we have all recognized over the years. When asked to write his address, he recalled the street name and number (here in AZ) and finished with a SCW...for Sun City West. While doing this he was asked where his family was from and he wrote, Verde Valley/Cottonwood. Now, please understand, this is NOT the quality of handwriting that Hattie Francis would have approved of on an ordinary day... but, Im sure she would have been delight, as we are, at his progress. While I was giving Jerry his haircut and shave he nodded and responded to my requests for turning or lowering his head and to my other small-talk questions and comments. As I was leaving he shook my hand firmly with lots of arm movement. I then made some comment in jest and he pulled his hand to his face and THUMBED HIS NOSE at me! We laughed!
