Jersey is red hot. Just ask Pat DiNizio, frontman for the Smithereens — of New Jersey. My stories are Jersey-centric, said DiNizio of his Confessions of a Rock Star show Thursdays at the Langosta Lounge on the boardwalk in Asbury Park. The Sopranos, Boardwalk Empire, Springsteen, Chris Christie, you cant get way from the national fascination of Jersey. Jersey born, and big in Vegas. DiNizio brought his act to the Riviera Hotel Casino in Las Vegas for nine months in 2012, and the reviews were stellar. The most amazing thing about this show, however, is not how well DiNizio plays, or sings, or writes, or remembers, but how perfectly he hosts and narrates his own show. He is totally at ease sparring with a raucous crowd and is as spontaneous on stage as any veteran Las Vegas performer has ever been, wrote LasVegazine. The show is DiNizio performing Smithereens hits (Blood and Roses, Drown in My Own Tears, Only a Memory, A Girl Like You and more) along with the classics that inspired the group, and DiNizios storytelling. Theres a commonality, a universal quality to the stories that people from Idaho, Washington state, the Midwest or even England will enjoy, DiNizio said. They like that touch of sentiment, of nostalgia, reminding them of the lives we used to live. Its the story of a kid garbage man from Scotch Plains who used to go to CBGBs for inspiration and eventually found himself on national TV and on stage at the Meadowlands. Call it One Man, One Car, One Guitar, DiNizio said. Er, Pat, one car? Hey, I got to drive down from Scotch Plains. Confessions of a Rock Star is now on an open run at the Langosta Lounge.
