Jesus said: Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: [For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also]. (Matthew 6:19-21 KJV) The heart of a person is like their center of gravity. The heart usually deals with emotions, or passions; good, or bad. What centers the heart is a persons mind, and what they mind (their thought process, if you will). Yet, the mind itself is comprised of that persons vision, their logic or reasoning, along with emotions or passion. If we are to desire the mind of Jesus Christ, we are to desire that all three parts of the mind are centered, perfectly, on Jesus Christ. Thus, when Jesus rebukes Peter, saying, Get behind me Satan: for you [mind] (savourest in the KJV) not the things of God, but the things of men, we can begin to understand what Jesus meant, or rather, what he knew. Obviously, Peter was zealous for Messiah to come (passionate/emotional), but his logic or reasoning was tainted; therefore, his vision of who Messiah was or what he was suppose to do was blurry or blocked--his understanding of Jesuss purpose for coming was misconstrued and he was technically blind, spiritually. Peter was zealous, but not according to knowledge, at that point in time (though he had just previously, by the Holy Ghost, confessed that Jesus was, the Christ: the Son of the living God). So, desiring the Mind of Christ isnt merely about doing the will of the Father; it is also about having the correct visual, understanding, and passion to make sure that the perfect will of God is carried out. Of course, Jesus had this, for he says, My meat is to do the will he who sent me, and to finish his work. And, the apostles, once receiving the Holy Ghost, were mindful of the things of God, not the things of men. Therefore, if we say we desire to come after Jesus and be baptized by the Spirit of God, we say that desire to set our eyes, hearts, and minds of things above, not on things below, which are carnal (of the flesh and/or sinful). For, to have our hearts set on the things of this life is to have our minds also centered on things temporal and/or worthless; thus, where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. Is it possible to discern from this the mind that is carnal, from the mind that is spiritual (of Gods Spirit, not just any spirit)? Yes. For, we can understand more clearly Pauls exhortation in Romans 8, for the mind that is perverted or darkened at any of the three points of the mind, is in danger of death (conscious or spiritual death); to be carnally minded is death. Yet, the mind that is of the Spirit has life and peace, being reconciled to true fellowship with the Father in and through Jesus Christ. They are turned by receiving a tender, broken heart for God, which in turn is centered on Jesus--Gods will for salvation, for Jesus is salvation, righteousness, and justification to those who truly believe. Bless the heart that is wholly tender towards Jesus. Woe to those hard of heart. Only the humbled can be taught by God. Amen.
