Jicarilla Pottery, Historical Background The name Jicarilla, pronounced heek-ah-REE-jah, means little basket. This name symbolizes an art form that made the Jicarilla well known. When the Spanish explorers encountered the Jicarilla in the 1500s, they made note of the beautiful pottery created by a band of Jicarilla that they called the Olleros. This Spanish name means, the people who make pottery, that refers to their long tradition and skills of creating beautiful, functional pottery. Historically, the Jicarillas believed that the clay was the womans spirit; they considered it a womans craft to produce the pottery for use in the home. In times of need, however, when resources were scarce, the pottery could be sold to provide for the basic need of food. The following photographs were taken from Sheldon Nunez-Velardes website.
