Job opportunities at the MRC Specialist Scientist Food Composition and Dietary Intake Assessment Biostatistics Unit - South African Food Data System (SAFOODS) Parow Valley, Cape Town Permanent position A senior position is available for a dietician/nutritionist at the South African Food Data System (SAFOODS) within the Biostatistics Unit of the MRC. This exciting and challenging position offers the opportunity to play a leadership role in the development of the South African Food Composition and Food Quantities Databases. The development of research tools, i.e. software, based on these databases forms an important and interesting part of the activities within the group. The databases and research tools developed by SAFOODS underpins nutrition research in the country. Applications are currently being awaited for this position at the MRC Head Office in Parow Valley, Cape Town. The applicant should have a good track record in nutrition research, including publication of results, with special reference to food composition and dietary intake assessment methodology. An interest in software development will be an advantage. Obtaining funding for the management of SAFOODS is one of the important tasks of this position. A high aptitude for working with figures, especially figures related to food composition, is required for the position. The position includes a significant amount of administrative work related to the coordination of SAFOODS activities. Requirements: Minimum PhD in Dietetics/Nutrition plus relevant post graduate experience; registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa as dietician or nutritionist; willing to work and negotiate with senior management; ability to work alone and lead a team; research skills and experience; •good publication record in nutrition as first author and co-author in peer reviewed scientific journals; ability to network and collaborate with stakeholders; advanced proficiency with the Microsoft Office Suite is an essential requirement; a keen interest in the composition of food and a knowledge of food preparation methods; experience with analysis of food intake data for research purposes will be a requirement; advanced knowledge of dietary assessment methodology and the application of it is required; accuracy with figures is essential; working knowledge of the use of the South African (SA) Food Composition Tables and MRC dietary analysis software; good verbal and written communication skills are required; a systematic and organised disposition; willingness to travel when required. In return, the MRC offers a total cost of employment remuneration package in the region of R 566 076 - R 625 498 per annum that includes organisation contribution towards fringe benefits.
