Jodi and I had a chat with a single friend this morning who was sort of saddened by the lack of honor that married folk hold for their marriages. Too often we mock marriage. You know, the old Shes always right; hes always wrong comments or the Shes a nag; hes a bum jokes. Those things have always made me uncomfortable because theyre not what our marriage is about... not even in jest. I always feel like the square peg when men (or women) share these jokes. I dont see the humor in them so I mostly just shrug them off or change the subject. Marriage is a beautiful thing. For Christians it should be one of the most beautiful things. The bible tells us that the relationship between a husband and wife should be an image of the love of Christ for His church. How do we mock that? I dont make Jesus jokes. I dont joke about my wife being a nag. Its just not something that I can fathom. I get that its just making fun and I totally understand that its just a joke. And yet, 50% of Christian marriages end in divorce. Thats just not very funny to me. Im not perfect. I fail at being a good husband often. Im just not willing to laugh that off. I love my wife. Eph 5 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, 30 because we are members of his body. 31 “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” 32 This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church.
