Joe Dante’s ambitious, ill-fated 1977 horror-musical film, Elvis - TopicsExpress

Joe Dante’s ambitious, ill-fated 1977 horror-musical film, Elvis Vs. Cthulhu (produced by Dimension Films), was intended to give The King a new boost, as well as paying homage to Samuel Z. Arkoff’s old AIP cult comedies of the “Beach Party” series (it includes a cameo by Harvey Lembeck). The film remained unreleased due to the muddy legal consequences of Elvis’ untimely death during the post-production period. Bootleg VHS copies began to circulate around 1991, and quickly acquired cult status. The film also stars Sissy Spacek as The King’s young paramour, Karen Black as the wicked priestess from Innsmouth (who sings along a number with Elvis), Richard Lynch as the evil Col. Marsh, and Anthony Hopkins as the scholarly Randolph Carter, a character clearly modeled from H. P. Lovecraft. Frank Zappa -among other rock celebrities- stars as himself, performing during the Kingsport Rock Festival which precedes the wild, action-packed climax. What the what?!? I’ve got to find a copy of this!!
