John Howell ... in our recent discussions about bandwidth - TopicsExpress

John Howell ... in our recent discussions about bandwidth provision, pricing and the future, you have repeatedly lauded the US providers for giving you awesome bandwidth and great prices. This never really struck me as likely, given what I know about the industry, and what my friends in other countries pay, so I finally got round to doing a little research over the weekend. Turns out that, as I suspected, the US is one of the worst first world country on the planet when it comes to bandwidth cost, and its just getting worse. We currently lag waaaay behind such notable tech power houses as the Slovak Republic, Columbia and Estonia in price / performance of broadband. And its not because of lack of bandwidth as a whole due to problematic geography and population density, as one would expect in countries like Australia. Its purely down to regional / local monopolies, and providers being able to charge basically whatever the hell they want. Which is why Im very nervous about basically handing them the keys to even more monopolizing and price gouging. I wont point you at the studies, as simply googling us broadband pricing comparison worldwide will yield ample data for you to draw your own conclusions. But most recent studies put the US around 40th in the price / performance ranking, world wide.
