John Ross shares memories from his days at CBWT Channel 4 in October, at a luncheon of the Winnipeg Chapter of the CBC Pensioners Association. John Ross presented Jack Lyttle, the first-ever operator of a Ross designed switcher with a Ross leather jacket stating, “I’m now very pleased that Jack Lyttle’s place in Canadian TV History has been recognized as the first operator of the early switcher, which is the foundation on which Ross Video was eventually built.” John joined CBC Winnipeg in the Spring of 1954 at the age of 18 as a telecine operator. After seeing wipes being used on the opening of the Jackie Gleason Show, John became intent on finding out how they were electronically created. He decided he wanted to design equipment that could make these effects. John then spent a few months designing and building a wipe generator from home, brought it to work where the director of the supper show “Spotlight” saw it, and used it on-air that night. John then obtained permission to build a better unit – on his own time – but paid for by CBC. John made a switcher that incorporated wipes and keys which was used every night on “Spotlight” for 15 years - years before any other Canadian Broadcaster could produce wipes or keys. https://flickr/photos/86941249@N04/15658739185/ https://flickr/photos/86941249@N04/15472765147/
