John Taylor Gatto is a retired American school teacher who taught for nearly 30 years and has authored several books on education. In 1990, he was awarded the New York City Teacher of the Year Award where he drew criticism from many in attendance of the ceremony with his acceptance speech stating: “The truth is that schools don’t really teach anything except how to obey orders.
