Joint PhD Project Scholarship Nanyang Technological University, Singapore With Paris Institute of Technology, France Project Name Base Station Cooperation for Future Cellular Mobile Communication Project Summary Recent research on cooperative communications has revealed that tools from MIMO theory, and more generally spatial processing, are instrumental in reaching the upper limits of capacity in large and dense networks. By treating every transmitting/ receiving node of the network as an element in a huge distributed MIMO array of antenna, maximum spatial processing related gains (diversity, multiplexing, beamforming and interference mitigation gains) can be envisaged. Furthermore, the denser the network gets, the more spatial degrees of freedom are left for use in its optimization. However, in-real-life networks, devices at the user end are characterized by limited computational capability with low power constraint and small size, knowledge of the propagation environment at any one device will be limited, exchange of channel knowledge between nodes will directly compete with the resource available for data transfer itself. This prohibits centralized network optimization which is typically assumed when applying traditional spatial processing (precoding, decoding). To deal with these challenges, distributed MIMO-type techniques must be sought, whereby each nodes performs precoding operations based on local knowledge only, allowing the network to extract global MIMO gains. This property can also be regarded as a feature of a self-organizing network at the PHY layer. Recently, a subset of this problem was addressed in [2] where a solution based on the socalled team decision theory was suggested. More general frameworks of decentralized cooperative processing are illustrated in [1]. Aim In this project, the candidate shall investigate distributed cooperative transmission schemes which include the use of relays as a tool to deal with interfence. We shall seek contributions in the form of communication theoretic concepts and/or design of novel practical transmission schemes. Game theory and team decision theory will be applied.
