[Joint Statement] Stop immediately the construction of 765kV high-voltage electricity transmission towers in Miryang! bit.ly/17eWFlt The news about struggles against the construction of 765kV high-voltage electricity transmission towers in Miryang of South Korea concern us very deeply. We express our regrets at this tragic situation. Especially, we strongly condemn Korean government and KEPCO(Korea Electronic and Power Corporation) as their violence against Miryang residents. They have been demanding alternatives for 8 years. Although the senior residents have been climbing steep mountains to deter the construction and have been appealing with their tears, Korean government and KEPCO is pushing ahead violently mobilizing the police. 765kV electricity transmission towers discharge electronic corona sound for 24 hours and spark on raining days. IARC(International Agency for Research on Cancer) classified the carcinogenic level of power lines at 2B. So, it is undeniable fact that these towers will destruct not only the living of residents but also ecology of Miryang. First of all, we take note of its background that Korean government is enforcing the construction despite the tragic suicide of one senior resident for resistance. Because it is related to the nuclear power plant that is tainted by corruption and the export contract to build a nuclear power plant in UAE(United Arab Emirates). Korean government and KEPCO are hurrying operation of the Shingori nuclear power plant No.3 that was embroiled in controversy because of the fact that they used defective control cables which its testing results were falsified. But Korean government and KEPCO are just hurrying its operation indicating their stance that they will change the components and complete the construction in a year without certain preparation for safety. Furthermore, the reason that they are hurrying the operation of Shingori nuclear power plant No.3 is because of the export contract with UAE that was dealt during the former president, Lee Myung-Bak administration. At that time, Korean government and KEPCO made a conditional contract. Following that contract, if KEPCO cant operate Shingori nuclear power plants No. 3, 4 which are reference model of nuclear power plants for UAE in September of 2015, they should pay 0.25% penalty to UAE. Ultimately, they are enforcing the destructive and anti-ecological construction of 765kV electricity transmission towers to cover their corruption and fault. And theyll gain just their own interests and profits. The struggle of Miryang residents is for safety of all of us and ecology. And the people all over the world are undergoing same situations. Despite the accident of Fukushima plant, nuclear power plants are still being built in many places of the world, and nowadays its high-risk is being shifted onto people of the third world. Korean government is insensitive to the safety. They are operating 10 years more after the end of design life time of another nuclear power plant and furthermore demanding sacrifice of residents for the export contract with other country. This irresponsible conduct of Korean government is showing that the people of the world are closely connected each other and threatened by greedy games of governments of each countries and the capital. Because of not only nuclear power plants but also construction of dam, exploitation of resources and so on, the living of aboriginal people and residents are threatened. And ecology is destructing indiscriminately all over the world. But most of natural resources and energy made by exploitation are using for metropolises and industrial facilities not aboriginal people. And it is producing disproportionately for profit of powerful nations, each governments and the capital. We judge that such an energy system operating by the patriarchal capitalism system will must take destructive results to us. So we urge Korean government and KEPCO to do as follows. 1. We support Miryang residents who are struggling at the risk of their life against anti-ecological and anti-democratic energy policy of Korean government. We urge Korean government and KEPCO to stop vicious propaganda against Miryang residents and enforcing of the construction of 765kV high-voltage electricity transmission towers. 2. We urge Korean government and KEPCO to shut down Gori nuclear power plant No.1 that is ended its design life time and to reexamine completely operation of Shingori nuclear power plant that is not guaranteed its safety. 3. We urge Korean government to stop expansion and export of nuclear power plants.
