Jonathan’s achievements during his 3 years Presidency. (V) Agriculture In a major departure from past approaches, agriculture is now being treated as a business, not a development program. Agricultural policy under President Jonathan has focused on assuring food security, reducing expenditure of foreign exchange on food imports, diversifying the economy, generating foreign trade and creating jobs. Under President Goodluck Jonathan, Nigeria took significant steps to move towards a self-sufficient and sustainable agriculture economy. These revitalization efforts mean increased investment in the food, agricultural and agribusiness sector and a reduced dependence on imports. Nigeria is now a net exporter of food. Achievements: • Increased food production by over 8 million metric tons, averting a predicted food crisis from flooding. • Reduced food imports from N1.1 trillion in 2011 to N648 billion in 2012. • Ended four decades of corruption in fertilizer and seed distribution. • Revolutionised the way farmers receive farm inputs through the e-wallet system, which assures farmers receive subsidized agricultural inputs directly and prevents exploitation from middlemen and profiteers. • Drastically curtailed wheat imports by enacting policies that encourage production of Nigerian produced cassava flour. • Increased the number of farmers in Northern states who are profitably engaged in farming to over 250,000. • Increased grain storage capacity by over 300%. • Increased rice production, placing Nigeria on the path towards self-sufficiency. ...to be continued..
