During Mourinho’s first stint at Stamford Bridge, he was occasionally criticised by outsiders for employing a negative, defensive approach – happy to take a 1-0 lead and then sit back and soak up pressure. Rumours were rife at the time that Roman Abramovich grew bored of this footballing philosophy, which was one of the reasons the Portuguese boss eventually left the club, despite securing back to back Premier League titles. Mourinho has quashed these suggestions however. “The owner never spoke to me about this. The owner always spoke to me on the same lines that I am saying: we want to play well, we want to play good football, we want to win matches, we want to play every match to win, we want to be considered an attacking team,” said the charismatic boss. “That’s what I want, that’s what he wants, that’s what I believe every fan wants. So it’s not about style. I think it’s more about mentality, more about philosophy, it’s more about approach,” he added. Mourinho is likely to deploy Eden Hazard, Juan Mata and Oscar behind a lone striker, who are technically fantastic footballers, in a different mould to flying wingers like Damien Duff and Arjen Robben he used during his first tenure. “So we have to play with the qualities of the players but our philosophy is very very clear,” he continued. “We don’t want to go to a stadium and be defensive for 89 minutes and wait for a chance and then score a goal and win 1-0 and go home happy. That is not our philosophy. Our philosophy is to try to be dominant every game knowing that when we play against good teams, we have to defend.” This well excite Chelsea fans, who will have seen from Mourinho’s dynamic Real Madrid team that the Portuguese can also win with an attacking brand of football. His success at Chelsea, and then Inter Milan was often based on a rugged defence, and powerful holding midfielders such as Claude Makelele at Chelsea, or Esteban Cambiasso at Inter, but his Madrid side was far more fluid. The Blues have recruited attacking talent Andre Schurrle, and promising midfielder Marco Van Ginkel this summer, and have been linked with a £40m move for Manchester United forward Wayne Rooney. If they wee to acquire the Englishman, the thought of Mata, Oscar and Hazard playing off the talented forward would leave fans drooling, and solidify Chelsea’s Premier League favourites tag.
