Josh Nollenberg writes: What NGTyson doesnt mention, however, is how the corporate practices by the largest companies who produce GMO foods encourage a monoculture, poison the environment and the food supply, and hurt small scale, local farming. Yes, humans have modified many crops over generations, but the process was much slower and much more democratic. A wild strawberry IS more flavorful than a larger, cultivated one and wild apples ARE tarter, but they produce a smaller yield. Farmers used to select foods based on yield and sweetness, etc. They have never before selected their food on the basis of whether it can survive being sprayed with a single pesticide sold by a single company before, nor has there ever been a single agricultural/chemical conglomerate which has purchased so much many seats in the government to direct federal policies toward its monopolistic ends. It should not be a surprise that, despite all of the grandiose advertising, GMOs actually encourage pesticide use, they have lower yields than organic crops after just a couple of years, and they are tied to a financial and intellectual property system which is designed to hurt farmers. Those are the problems with how GMOs are being created in our current corporatist system.
