Joāo Gilberto (along with the songwriting master, Antônio Carlos Jobim) is my favourite musician from Brazil. Although I dont speak portuguese, the complexity of these chords, melody and lyrics communicates something very simple that I understand musically and emotionally. I played a few of Antonio and Joāos songs when I was gigging a few years ago and was nervous every time I did, hoping that there was no one who could speak portuguese in the crowd, noticing my mispronunciations, while I tried to get my Gilberto on.
