Judge John Hodgman Rules via The New York Times Magazine Tynetta writes: When cabbies talk on the phone while driving, I feel no obligation to tip, as they are driving while impaired. My boyfriend says I should warn them of my policy. I disagree. Only cowards silently withhold tip as “punishment.” Not only does it fail to resolve the issue, it also makes it worse, as it reinforces your driver’s impression that his fares are monsters and not worth protecting. Your boyfriend is right; you should raise the issue politely. And if your driver refuses to hang up, you may then refuse to tip. But I suspect that the actual result will surprise you: You will learn you are both humans who can talk and listen to each other!
