Judy has asked me to post this for her... Around 3pm Friday, Judy began experiencing tightness in her chest and pain in her arms and chest. It felt like every nerve ending in her upper body started firing at once. Her Dr. told her to go to the ER. When she got to IMC her pain level was about an 8. They tested her blood and found her blood sugar had gone from normal to well above 600 in a very short time. They also found ketones in her urine - even though her sugar levels have been well under control for years. EKG and CT Scan came back normal, but pain level kept increasing to 9 and eventually even a 10+. (I have never heard Judy cry out in pain before - but this time she was unable to stop herself) The worst pain she has ever felt. Very scary. The only thing that came close to touching it was heavy duty IV narcotics. They admitted her that night to manage pain and get her blood sugar under control. Saturday, they thought that they had it under control and were thinking of releasing her later in the day. Around noon, her sugar shot up again above 600 or more and the pain returned. Each time it flared she would get nauseous and vomited several times. Though slow to get on top of it, the staff at IMC eventually again got her the heavy pain meds and treated the high sugar. Again another night in the hospital. Sunday, they again got the sugar down to around normal. She has now been released. Even though they have no answers as to what has caused these episodes. They have plenty of theories, but have shot down every one of them. We have no way to know if it will occur in the future or not. In fact it most likely will happen again unless someone figures out what is causing it! (This is actually the 3rd occurrence in the last 2 months.) Thank you to all that have been concerned and are willing to help in any way possible. Right now she is resting. And worrying about what to do if it happens again.
