Julia Katherine Armstrong Kaufmann, sister of Oak Alleys last resident owner Josephine Armstrong Stewart, was born on February 5th, in 1889. Their parents sent Josephine to chaperone her sister Julia to New Orleans while she attended Newcomb College. Julia was very close to her sister and visited Oak Alley frequently during the 47 years Mrs. Stewart lived at Oak Alley. Julia found her sisters taste in decorating sub-par and took it upon herself during these frequent visits to re-decorate the Big House while Mrs. Stewart was gardening or riding horses on the grounds. No sooner was Julia crossing the bridge on her way back to New Orleans did Mrs. Stewart have the house put back to her liking. Prior to her death in 1972, Josephine Stewart created the nonprofit, Oak Alley Foundation, and named her sister, Julia, as one of the charter members of the Board of Trustees. Julia is also the grandmother of our current Executive Director, Zeb Mayhew, Jr. and great grandmother to the Chairman of the Board, Shelby Saer.
