July 2, 2013 Connection, I just can’t get no connection… But the truth of the matter is quite the opposite; I’m tangled up in one connection after another. (And yet take comfort in the possibility that, in the words of Mr. Blake, “If the fool would persist in his folly he would become wise.”) Or anyhow, less confused. The way this deal seems to be working out, at least for now, is to allow the connections, forget and erase the majority, and to see where the remaining things lead, if only to something amusing, as in the juxtaposing a few lines from Tom Stoppard‘s Arcadia (connection Lillias) with a quick bit of Groucho in “Horsefeathers” (indirect connection PG), anchoring the whole mess (again, for now) with Kessler’s diaries, Blake’s “Marriage”, Jaynes’ speculations on consciousness, with assists from everyone from Sam the Sham to Blind Willy McTell. Keeping in mind –sort of – the notion of slaying the predestined dragon, which is occurring pretty much off stage. For now. And now, at three in the AM, it’s time for (ta-da) a little taste of that speculatin’ mo’fo, Dr. Julian Jaynes. “Memory is the medium of must have been.” “Another way of saying it is that one does one’s thinking before one knows what one is to think about.” “Our minds work much faster than our consciousness can keep up with.” “… we tend too much to think of language as being solid as a dictionary, with granite-like permanence, rather than as the rampant, restless sea of metaphor which it is.” Speaking of metaphor, rampant restless or otherwise, I believe it’s time to crawl into the arms of Morpheus.
