July 3,1863-Gettysburg (cont.)- In the 3 days of Gettysburg, the Federal Army of the Potomac suffered a total of 23,049 casualties. The Confederate Army of Northern Virginia suffered 23,231. Federal forces engaged 85,000 men. Confederate forces engaged 65,000 and would lose almost 1/3 of their Generals. The entire campaign, which began June 3rd, would total over 57,000 casualties, on both sides. On the field, 8,000 bodies of young Northern and Southern men lie in the hot sun. 3,000 horse carcasses are burned. The overwhelming stench made many violently ill. The bodies needed to be buried immediately.
