#JulyComplex Friday Update September 5, 2014 Video: As Jim Mackensen, public information officer for the July Complex, was driving to the morning briefing he saw a large plume of smoke coming from his Man Fire. Mackensen explains what transpired last night and this morning on the fire and the additional growth of the Man Fire. Date of Fire Start: July 31, 2014 Cause: Lightning Complex Total: 78% Cost: $46.5M Acreage/Containment: Man Fire: 3,263 - 10%; Whites: Fire 33,763 - 98%; Log Fire: 3,632 - 100%. Resources: Total Personnel: 310 Hand Crews: 5 Engines: 11 Dozers: 12 Water Tenders: 13 Helicopters: 7 Fire Status Man Fire: Yesterday and last night, with the very dry and windy weather conditions, the fire grew substantially on both the East and West flanks. Today crews will be assessing this growth and identify opportunities to continue the full suppression strategy. Helicopters will be utilized to help keep the east and west sides of the fire in check. Crews will continue the use of Minimum Impact Suppression Tactics — utilizing geographic features and natural barriers to reduce impacts to the wilderness values. Whites Fire: Yesterday crews continued work on fire suppression repair by removing hazard trees, rocks and rollout debris. Resource advisors are working with fire crews to identify and repair areas affected by fireline construction and areas requiring erosion control measures. This work will continue through the weekend. There are still areas of heat within the fire perimeter and there will continue to be burning pockets of fuel creating smoke columns. These pockets of burning fuel are not a threat to the fire lines. Log Fire: The fire will continue to be monitored for any remaining interior visible smoke. Fire Weather/Behavior: A RED FLAG WARNING has been extended to 11 p.m. tonight, due to gusty wind and very low relative humidity. Today is predicted to be mostly clear with temperatures ranging from 72-93 degrees, relative humidity from 4-10%, and wind from east/northeast at 5-10 mph with gusts to 20 mph. Emergency Forest Closures: A number of Emergency Forest Closure Orders have been implemented for public and fire fighter safety.
