June 12 is not just a day of reminiscence and regret. It is more - TopicsExpress

June 12 is not just a day of reminiscence and regret. It is more than that. It is a day of sober reflective. We need to ask ourselves pertinent questions! What if the result was not withheld after that of about 14 states were already declared? What if the late MKO Abiola had been declared winner? Certainly it will not have an automatic Uhuru for Nigeria as a nation but i am sure many things will have been corrected. Democratic norms and principles would have been installed. Freeness and Fairness is the starting point of any genuine democracy. Other democratic norms flow from it. If twenty years ago Nigerians could disregard religion and vote for an all Muslim Abiola/Kingibe ticket, what went wrong now? Why all this religious brouhaha? If Bashir Tofa, a Hausa man could loose his own local government to Moshood Abiola,a yoruba man twenty tears ago, what went wrong with us now as a nation? I see ethnic and religious drums sounding everywhere. Competence is now relegated to the background. The mantra now is “it is our turn“. Where did we get it wrong and how do we pick up the pieces? It is not just eulogizing Abiola that will make his spirit happy. His wish was to forge a bond of unity where one will not be judged by where he comes from or how he worships but by competence. These and much more should be the food on our plates today. Please chew and if possible, ruminate on it. God bless our nation.
