June is evidently PTSD awareness month. I was diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder in college in my mid-20s, while dealing with the aftermath of a death threat from my emotionally abusive ex-husband. PTSD is brought on by experiencing traumas. These include witnessing or experiencing domestic violence, serious automobile or motorcycle accidents, near-death or high-risk medical conditions or emergencies, or the stress of being in a combat zone. PTSD can cause severe disruption to life; I had to drop out of college because of it, for example. Night terrors, panic attacks, social phobia, and generalized anxiety are often effects of PTSD. PTSD can be treated with talk therapy, EMDR (eye movement desensitization and reprocessing) therapy, and medication. Increased access to these mental health services, and decreased stigma of mental illness, will both do a lot to help currently tormented people get help.
