Just For Today, consider that the greatest skill of modern consultants and effective advisors is to listen to other people speaking about their own view of the world, following which they synthesise other people’s ideas into neat, acceptable solutions that other people did not visualise. That skills set is so rare that such consultants and advisors charge the highest fees. As priests, social workers, parents, friends and siblings we need to develop that skills set if we want to be useful. If we feel we are prophets we can preach or exhort but remember to do that somewhere else because prophets are not accepted in their own place, family or country as made clear in the Bible. Today’s effective leaders understand that so well. The only way to influence, direct, control or even dictate in today’s world is to listen, listen, listen and then speak only a few words, ideally in parabolic language. In that way, you can illustrate clearly what you want people to do (in parables) while recognising that between a defined starting and finishing point, there is a curve you cannot and do not want to control.
