Just a few notes about the Change for Change Campaign, my job as a - TopicsExpress

Just a few notes about the Change for Change Campaign, my job as a Student Philanthropist, and why I find them both very important. Many people have asked me why they should participate in the Change for Change Campaign if they are already paying Northland for tuition, fees, room, board, etc. I would like to say that this is a TOTALLY fair and acceptable question to be asking (in fact, as a Phonathon caller, I get this question many times from parents, as well! Again, entirely fair). What I would like students (as well as parents, friends, and alumni) to understand, is this: Before financial aid is taken into consideration, Northland students are fortunate enough to have over one-third of their education being paid for by other people. This is twice and sometimes even three times as much as many other private colleges in the state of Wisconsin and throughout this nation. In addition to this, 98% of all Northland students receive some sort of financial aid, often through scholarships! More times than not, both of these are being paid for through gifts from other individuals not unlike you, myself, or either of our parents. These gifts are being given by families of Northland staff and faculty, by local business owners, by ordinary people who may or may not have a college education themselves, by alumni, by their parents, by our parents, by people who are not making a whole lot of money themselves even. These gifts are being given to us students by people who decided that they valued Northland and us students enough to invest what little money they have in making sure that we can get the education that we deserve. We are so incredibly fortunate to have this support from people who may never know us or see the positive ways we impact this world. It is for this reason that we need to show our appreciation to these people and give back in philanthropic ways! At Northland and through my job here on campus, there are two major ways to do this. The first is by simply showing your gratitude through a handwritten thank-you to these individuals. This is so incredibly easy to do and only takes a few moments. The second way to show your appreciation is through the Change for Change Campaign that is wrapping up this week. By simply giving a few cents of your spare pocket change, you are showing your appreciation for all that has been given to you by past students and family and friends of the college. The gifts we have received were given to us under the expectation that we would do good in the world and pass on the favor to somebody else. By giving your change, you have passing it forward so that another student down the line can have the same opportunities as we have had. Sure, we are already paying all this money for tuition. But that simply covers operational costs of Northland. Northland can only function through gifts through the annual fund - which is entirely separate from anything related to tuition, fees, etc. Through the Change for Change Campaign, you can designate your gift to go anywhere on campus where you would like to see change occur; the most common gift location - and the location where there is the greatest need - is scholarships. So when you consider giving to Change for Change this week, please keep in mind that your gift is keeping our degrees valuable, supporting Northlands future, and potentially supporting students just like ourselves, just as we have been supported by students past. So with all that said, if you are still reading, I thank you for taking the time to read and consider these thoughts. If you have ANY questions about where your tuition is going, or about the Change for Change Campaign, please do not hesitate to ask me! I am more than willing to ask any questions to the best of my ability, or direct you to somewhere that can help you find the answers you need. My room is 326 in Fenenga if you need me, or else feel free to message, email, call, text, carrier pigeon, whatever! I have also made this status entirely public so that you can take and share this if you feel inclined to do so. Thank you!
