Just a few words about my passion for Panamas football (the game Americans call soccer) team. To understand the monumental task of beating Mexico is to understand how a tiny place with a strong pride takes on Goliaths like the United States and other behemoths of the world and manages to compete. It is a country with less people than the City of Seattle. Talent comes out of this tiny microscopic country. I was born there because the United States wanted to build a canal there, and after many years of stressing it sovereignty over the Canal it was returned and the humble place runs it well. Rod Carew, who grew up in one of the towns I lived in, is a MLB Hall of Famer. Mariano Rivera will be. The percentage of boxing champions based on the population is un-matched. But here is the astounding about tonights game, football or soccer was not even a popular sport 30 years ago. Of course, it was played, but when you were born a baseball was put in one hand and boxing glove on the other. I am proud of my heritage and never question Gods choice of placing my feet their as a birthplace.
