Just a little some-somethin; It was the dream, her screaming out - TopicsExpress

Just a little some-somethin; It was the dream, her screaming out to her mother that jolted Sabrina awake. Her eyes strained to adjust to the darkness of the room then travelled over to the bedside clock. Six Oclock. Was it the next morning? That same evening? What had only been meant to be a cats nap for her had turned into a full sleep. At a little past eleven Oclock that morning she had lain her head against the fluffed-out pillows of her old bed in her mothers house. She had been tired. Bone-weary tired. Drained. Emotionally and mentally so. So tired in fact that snakes had started appearing in her dreams. She had been dreaming of lying on one when she began calling out to her mother. But she must have been screaming silently because the house was quiet. Too quiet. no one had rushed up the stairs to check on her. She listened for slow footsteps. Nothing but the soft sound from the radio. 88.5 FM, her mothers favorite station. She inhaled the smells drifting up to her from the kitchen, perhaps a roast and the undeniable scent of a peach cobbler. She hadnt wanted her mother to go to any trouble on her account. She had simply stopped by, like she usually did twice a week...and every other Sunday for dinner...just to say hi. But as soon as she sat down a feeling of sleepiness had overtaken her and caused her mother to insist that she lie down for a while. Just long enough to catch yourself some shut-eye. Youve been running around like a crazy woman lately. Sabrina hadnt told her mother anything but a mother knows things. From the I- feel-sorry-for-you look that she gave her, Sabrina was sure she knew about her pregnancy. But how? How could she? She didnt even know herself until two days ago. When the doctor told her, fourteen weeks she had literally slid to the floor in a state of hysteria and shame. and after kicking about wildly she was more embarrassed about having to be assited to her car by his nurse and an orderly.. The father? How was she going to tell him, a married man with four kids by his wife? Because knowing him, he would try to convince her to terminate the pregnancy. Try and convince her that she was a career woman and would be challenged with the responsibility of raising a child alone. She threw her legs to the side of the bed, sat up, and decided that she would go downstairs and pretend that everything was normal. To be continued (Gary Houston)
