Just a thought. We had a really good discussion on my page about the value of live music and how little the artists are getting paid. It was a calm , multi perspective conversation with some great input from some very talented seasoned players. Marshall Lawrence Wayne Allchin Rex Rodgers and several others. In a nutshell, good live bands get paid very little. As you would after receiving great service in a restaurant, you leave a simple tip. A why not directly tip the band if you are really enjoying them? Clubs don`t pay much. If you walk by a great player in the subway and they rock you. Don`t you flip them a couple bucks? I do. When you go to a club, love the band tip them directly. It`s a great gesture of appreciation. The pass the hat tradition needs to be re-initiated, that is how the original traveling musicians were paid. Bands, you should have NO SHAME in putting out a "please tip the band if you are happy" box front and center. I was at a local gig three weeks ago. The band was rockin. They tried to get off the stage, but people kept coming up and dropping $20s of 1 more song. This went on for an hour. What is a TIP? Here is one definition that applies. T.I.P. (Thumb, Index, Pinky), the three fingers representing "I Love You" in sign language. Love the band, give them your version of a cover charge. A nice $5 $10 or if you are drunk $100 tip sure would help offset the lousy pay. If 50% of the patrons chipped in a $10 tip well you do the math. Bands, PUT OUT A TIP JAR YOU DESERVE IT.
