Just an idea. Bear with me. 3.2 million litres of fuel were sold last year. Instead of bringing in a million ways to tax islanders out of their vehicles, why not put 10p a litre on fuel. Income = £3.2m. Then £25 parking clock per year, across the board, 10,000 cars at £25 = £250,000. Not sure how many vehicles on Guernsey roads, but take this number, and if theres more, great. Total = £3.5m without any more admin/infrastructure. This will be a user pays, no classic/unused vehicle will be affected by this like the campers or classic restoration vehicles etc. that will be if they brought road tax back in. Not to mention all of the extra admin. Which is why they ditched it in the first place. Also, and this is controversial. Remove red diesel. That would surely bring in more money, wouldnt it? Why is no one pushing this? Is it because the SOG are scared to put it on fuel as there will be uproar? I dont think so. Its because they are stubborn! If we all agree, then we should suggest it and push it. It would remove admin, it would remove the transport strategy, and maybe even remove Some unwanted baggage in the states. Or at least let them get on with figuring out how to use the money wisely!!
