Just as there was a split between Ayn Rand and the Brandens in the sixties, there are two major US Objectivist organizations: The Ayn Rand Institute (ARI) and The Atlas Society. Rands estate became ARI. One criticism of Rand, that I do have some sympathy for, was that her opinions, often on matters not easily related to philosophy, became gospel that could not be argued with. ARI has continued in that tradition, generally requiring conformity with the threat of ex-communication for those that do not conform. Thats not to say that they do not do good work - Im glad they are there. But when an organization becomes monolithic and dictatorial, I dont see how that advances ideas. Philosophy requires open debate and questioning or it will simply die away.
