Just back from seeing Blancanieves - brilliant is all I can say; I gasped at its black and white cinematography (the opening few minutes alone are worth the price of a ticket), in awe of its editing, relished the acting (particularly of Angela Molina as the grandmother and Maribel Verdu as the wicked stepmother), delighted in the darkening of the fairytale on which it was based bringing it closer to the world of the Brothers Grimm, was enraptured by the score, and yes, sniffled more than a tad. Truly a cinephiles movie. Delightful and welcome though it was, The Artist pales in comparison to Bergers breathtaking vision and narrative flair. Transposing a fairytale to early 20th century Spain, replete with all the shortcomings that pre-war society imposed on family and expression, is a stroke of storytelling genius all too rare on screen.
