Just below the Mount of Olives is The Garden of Gethsemane. Between them is a cemetery (picture 1). People are buried in the ground but the vault like structures above them are actually the tombstones. You notice there are no flowers! You also notice that there are rocks on top of all the graves! In Israel people dont put flowers on the graves, they put rocks on them to signify a visit! The benefit here is that rocks never go away We walked down a very steep, narrow street to the garden of Gethsemane! We were soon to learn that narrow streets would be the norm! In fact in the old city of Jerusalem, most of the streets look more like hallways! If you look at picture number 13 you will see the sealed up Eastern gate! The gate was not sealed up on the night that Jesus was taken prisoner! Judas and the Romans and all those following them would have exited the Eastern gate, come down that hill and into the garden of Gethsemane where they arrested Jesus! This proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that Jesus gave up his life and no one took it! As you can plainly see the gate is very visible from the garden of Gethsemane! The area where this picture is taken would be the general area where Jesus and those with him wouldve been standing. The soldiers wouldve exited the Eastern gate and had torches and a mob following them! It would have been very visible from this point! If Jesus and wanted to get away it was about a five minute run up the hill and over the other side where he could have easily vanished and not been found! They did not sneak up on Jesus! He was not surprised at their coming! It was plainly visible! Jesus freely gave his life so that we might be set free and live in heaven someday!
