Just finished at the ceremony for the installation of the new High Sheriff of Merseyside, Abila Pointing MBE, DL. Abila is the first Muslim to hold the ancient position and has said that faith and education will be her main motivators for the year ahead. The position of High Sheriff today is largely symbolic and duties include receiving royal visits. It was an honour for me to be selected to serve as her Muslim Chaplain and Im looking forward to the good work to come. Todays event was attended by the Lord Lieutenant of Merseyside, Lord Mayor of Liverpool, Outgoing High Sheriff, Vice Chancellor of University and many other distinguished guests, leaders and community activists. I brought the ceremony to an end with a short talk about the Muslim involvement in civic life on Merseyside stretching back to the strong links Sheikhul Islam Abdullah Quilliam had with Queen Victoria and concluded with a supplication.
