Just finished watching The Grandmaster. The first film from Wong Kar Wai. The first film from the director that I have not fallen asleep to (and that includes his 15 minute BMW film). It is very good and beautiful (but everyone of his films looked pretty). It started with the promise of a huge fighting tournament that (for many reasons) never happens. I like the fact that it does not follow the typical structure of a fighting film. In fact the main character Ip Man (Tony Leung) does not do any fighting in the last half of the film. I like that it did not follow a typical formula, although I was very happy with the fighting sequences which Wong Kar Wai did not direct. Considering how bad the action was in Ashes in Time, I am very happy about this choice.
