Just got back from Fort Sill (Welcome to the Pride of Oklahoma, Sir!}. Had a great and rewarding time there, working again with MAJ Chad Abbie, my chief there, with CPT Heath Merkley, and a small and dedicated group of young people. They do a lot with a small group, and I was very happy to join them. Made some good friends, they are good people. We were doing a case, and the patient got very agitated; our anesthesia guy, a young Captain whom I will refrain from naming, said, “here, I will sing for you,” and belted out Josh Groban’s “You raise Me Up” , with a great voice, and no kidding, I don’t know if the patient was startled or soothed, she calmed down and was, hugs at the end. Pretty amazing. You know that song, Herb? You, Joe? Fort Sill is the center for Air Defense and Artillery. Artillery, Napoleon called it the queen of battles, and there are all sorts there. It was really interesting. They use it, to, boom boom all day long. Only disappointment there, it was 25 F, overcast, and no snow. What a scam. Last time I was at Fort Sill was twenty years ago, my daughter Maria Amalia and I went there from Austin to visit her brother Roberto, who was doing his ROTC basic. It was 110 F, and there they were, training away. We brought pizzas and Gatorade for him and his buddies. Berto was holding his head and the NCOIC went away, muttering, “civilians…” But we had a party with his group. They were going, “dude, I want to marry your sister.” Now I’ve been ten years with the Army, this great institution driven by principle, Duty, Honor, Country. I look back and can say, echoing the guys in the innards of the Sherman tank in Fury, “Best damn job I ever had.”
