Just had some feedback from a patient that I have been waiting for - TopicsExpress

Just had some feedback from a patient that I have been waiting for for a very long time. This late-40s male is in fantastic shape, is very active and complained of low back pain on and off for years. We did all the normal great things that we do and he still had low back pain. MRIs, injections, you name it. Finally got into the conversation about his gym workouts. I asked to watch him go through his movements with each and every body part. As it turns out, he was using his lumbar spine extensors for EVERY movement. He would over-arch his low back on just about everything he showed me. I asked him to cut the weights in half and focus on keeping a neutral lumbar spine prior to any lift. I called this his pre-movement checklist. This helps to undo our inherent patterns. No soft tissue treatment in the world was going to help this individual. Coaching him to be an expert in identifiying his own patterns and putting in mechanisms to prevent them is what made the difference. He popped in today for a completely different issue and he reported having no back pain for the last 8 months which was the last time he was in. This stuff really makes my day!
