My MFA Graduate Lecture Has Been Printed in the UCR Residency Schedule June 9th, 2014 4:30: Graduate Lecture: Carol Damgen Will I love or will I be alone? (Specific tools from a screenwriter’s toolkit, based on Erik Erikson’s Stage 6, “Intimacy vs. Isolation” in his human beings life cycle theory.) This lecture aims to analyze the creation of characters stuck in the internal conflict between Intimacy and Isolation. We’ll take a detailed look at the work of three screenwriters who successfully tackled this challenge: Mark Andrus’s As Good As It Gets, Thomas McCarthy’s The Station Agent and Frank Galati’s The Accidental Tourist. Using the Human Life Cycle Theories of developmental psychologist Erik Erickson as a guide, I aim to identify specific tools to help craft characters whose inner struggle will hook the audience from the page one to the closing credits.
