Just outside Cahir, the Swiss Cottage is reputed to be one of the finest examples of cottage orné in Ireland or Britain. Designed for Lord and Lady Cahir by Regency architect John Nash, the Cottage is a delightful ornamental lodge from the 19th century, and probably used to accommodate Lord Cahir’s guests. With a beautiful setting overlooking the river, the Cottage is a splendid home with lots to inspire visitors. It’s in the style of Cottage Ornee – “a rustic building of picturesque design”, which has been described as being like “a small villa”. The thatched roof, cast iron fencing, and branching exterior woodwork are classic features of this type of architecture. Inside, visitors can see rare Dufour wallpaper, depicting the city of Istanbul. The Swiss Cottage was renovated in the 1980s and is now open for guided tours. It is located just south of Cahir and signposted from the R670, or accessible by foot from Cahir Castle car park. (Derek)
