Just posted a comment to Anthony Byrnes radio column about arts coverage in Los Angeles: I am proud to serve on the board of the newly created Stage Raw. I’d like to share a little more with the listeners of KCRW’s Anthony Byrnes’ Opening the Curtain. We, at Stage Raw, hope we are not circling wagons. The intent is to take those wagons on uncharted trails. Trails that will lead to a new and expanding way we look at arts journalism. The new Stage Raw is not intended to replicate former L.A. Weekly coverage, but to create a fusion of the best of whats been lost with participatory features that directly grapple with current realities: that the number of people attending live performance is diminishing, while the number of people creating art is not. The answer is to actively engage new audiences through new media, here and in other places. To have just reviews and features be put out there to a larger audience is not the answer—even on L.A. Observed—since theres nothing about old-school journalism thats going to interest people in theater who werent already interested in it to begin with! Thats why the Los Angeles Times, L.A. Weekly, the Independent in London, and the New York Observer are cutting theater reviews! Stage Raw has already met with the Royal Court and Young Vic theatres in London and all three orgs are exploring an international digital new play festival. Warsaw has already signed on to this idea via Joanna Klass and the same idea is being explored in Moscow. If arts journalism is about a sense of place, and putting Los Angeles as a thriving arts community on the map, we need to know about the map beyond our own geographic confines. As Stage Raw gets up to full steam, we hope you’ll see a resource that will not only give artists a place to explore and collaborate with a larger audience and, for the larger audience, to explore and collaborate with artists through this digital site. kcrw/etc/programs/ab/ab140325dont_circle_the_wago
