Just posted this for a friend and thought others might find it useful when trying to form an opinion on the latest federal government educational reforms: Common Core is just one component of a larger bundled package of federal educational reforms coming by way of states seeking eligibility for federal funding (like Race To The Top and ARRA). If you want to connect the dots, dont just research common core, also be sure to research the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, InBloom, Race to the Top, Statewide Longitudinal Data Systems, 2011 changes to FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act); ed.gov/edblogs/technology/files/2013/02/OET-Draft-Grit-Report-2-17-13.pdf Federal Government Reports (input page 62 for some lovely Orwellian foreshadowing), ccsso.org/What_We_Do/Education_Data_and_Information_Systems.html CCSSO (the copyright holder for common core) scroll to the bottom of the page for this enlightening statement The Education Information Management Advisory Consortium (EIMAC) is CCSSOs network of state education agency officials tasked with data collection and reporting; information system management and design; and assessment coordination. EIMAC advocates on behalf of states to reduce data collection burden and improve the overall quality of the data collected at the national level. There are more, but thats more than enough to start chewing on if you are really intent on seeking out what is behind Common Core. Common Core may just be a collection of, in my opinion, misguided, noncritical-thinking standards but there is something much larger going on; which you will discover if you truly dig into it. Common Core is just one symptom of a greater disease.
