Just read a sad story about the probable extinction of the northern subspecies of the white rhino. I looked it up on wiki, as I knew the southern white rhino was doing rather well. Anyway, I came across this sentence: It spends about half of the day eating, one third resting, and the rest of the day doing various other things. I became somewhat obsessed by the casual doing various other things. It seemed a curiously human way to spend ones time. I imagined the rhino flicking listlessly through the Metro, or popping into the Oxfam shop to see if there were any interesting books in, or standing by the sandwich toaster contemplating, and ultimately rejecting, a cheese and onion toastie, or trying to find the remote for the telly, giving up, and randomly pressing the buttons on the side of the screen, hoping something might come on, or listening to a feature on the lesbian bee keeping community on Womans Hour, or knocking over the athletes foot powder in the bedroom, covering up the mess with his pyjama bottoms and making a mental note to get the hoover out for it later on, or just gazing out of the window, trying to work out where it had all gone wrong. Anyway, I was sorry for the rhinos and I suppose well have used them all up, soon.
