Just to let you know a couple of things coming up soon in South Park: Over the last six months the Friends have been working with the Steam Plough Club to celebrate the life of John Fowler, the man who invented the steam plough and married Elizabeth Pease of Darlington (both are buried in the graveyard behind the Friends Meeting House in Skinnergate) This collaboration has resulted in a story board being created in honour of the 150th anniversary of Fowler’s death and the Lord Mayor will be unveiling the board in front of the Fowler monument in South Park at 2pm on Saturday 27th September. Unfortunately this weekend is also the Festival of Thrift at Lingfield Point and there may not be as many visitors to the park as might have been, so please do come and celebrate with us and show your support for the work we do in keeping the park current and interesting. This year has something else to celebrate – it’s the tenth year the Friends of South Park have been in existence. Our AGM this year is at 7pm on Wednesday 1st October in the Education Centre in the park (next to the café) and it would be lovely to see you there. The AGM updates on events in the past year and reports on the financial situation of the group. It’s very informal and this year we also have a speaker from Groundwork, Lisa Locke who will be talking about a project we are undertaking to make an “Alice in Wonderland” themed feature on the small bowling green. Our website at southparkdarlington.co.uk is still going strong with regular updates and pictures of events in the park. Have a look at all the events this summer, the weather has been most kind.
